About Shorts Movie Theater
Shorts Movie Theater will be the first-ever cinema dedicated exclusively to short films. The micro-cinema will offer a 40-seat theater that screens a curated selection of the best new and classic short films. The bar & café in the lobby, called The Suggestion Box, will host talk-backs, premieres and social events.
Our shorts will be programmed individually with a three minute break in-between, when audiences can decide if they want to stay for the next, take a break in the bar, or head home for the night. Picture a first date: you could see a short or two, hang in the bar to talk, and when conversation dries up, see another short. Audiences will pay for what they’ve seen at the end, like they’re settling up a bar tab.
Shorts has the potential to hold the rare combination of financial sustainability and artistic independence. With multiple revenue streams from general admission and private events, we can share ticket revenue with filmmakers to generate a unique economic opportunity and incentivize the artists to build and understand their audiences. As a 501(c)3 non-profit, Shorts has access to in-kind support and individual contributions to bolster our earned income.
Shorts will give New Yorkers a place to enjoy, learn from, and be challenged by independent media. Audiences today watch short form content more than anything else; let's harness that habit to bring new audiences to work that is weird, wild, and one of a kind - and most importantly, made by individual artists, not huge corporations.
