Frequently Asked Questions
What is this?
Shorts is a movie theater playing short films. Because the movies are short, you can watch a bunch or a little depending on the kind of night you want to have.
To make that flexibility possible, there is a three minute break between each movie when you can go in or out.
When you’re in the lobby on a break, you might want to order the first course of dinner or a round of drinks (liquor license pending…), do some chit chatting, before heading back to the theater for more.
You keep track of which movies you’ve seen with a ticket that lists the whole line up. The usher stamps your movie ticket on whichever movies you go in or out on - kind of like a train conductor.
Whenever you’re done, you come pay for the movies you saw by showing us the stamps on your ticket.
Wow that’s crazy
I know. And it’s crazy that audiences across all demographics watch short-form content more than anything else and there’s not a single way to watch it together. The thing we do most for “fun” and to take in media, is a thing we do exclusively in isolation.
But are you playing that kind of short video like instagram or short films like film festivals?
The short answer is no, we’re not playing instagram videos but also its an interesting question of how we can define short video, and all that falls under it, as a worthwhile type of art to gather around. With the movies, the goal is for this to be a space that offers you variety in the way that your phone also offers you variety. Oh, the phone! The muse with many faces! Each week we try out new types of movies and each week we learn from those choices about what works at Shorts.
How do I play my short film here?
Local filmmakers (or films with a local audience that want to see the film) can submit to the Community Slot. This is a free program - free to submit and free for the audience to attend. It’s the first movie every day, around 5:10pm. We recruit the rest of our program from movies we see and love at screening events, festivals, and online platforms. Check the showtimes for this week!
What’s for dinner?
Shorts serves a delicious dinner and snacks menu, designed to match the fun and novelty of the movies themselves. Our chef is Natalie Cappellini.
Shorts is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Our mission is to support the development of artists and audiences of short film.
